Smith stormed to top with five birdies consecutively on the back nine, becoming the first Australian to win The Open title in 28 years.

His stunning final round 64 resulted in him finishing at 20 under par for the tournament, a new record in the 150-year-old championship and something he said would be his highlight.

Smith promised to celebrate by finding out how many beer cans he could fit into the Claret Jug. This prompted a flood of admiration online.

One Twitter golf fan wrote, "What a legend!"

Another comment was: "Man after mine own heart. What a boy
✌🏻."

A third person said, "Cameron Smith, you are a legend, thank you for winning that tourney."

Smith spoke of his joy at winning at St Andrews, having set a course record for lowest total of 268 to his victory.

Open Champion: "To win an Open Championship is probably going to become a highlight of a golfer’s career. It is amazing to do it in St Andrews. This place is amazing.

"I will definitely find out how many beers this Jug can hold, that's for certain."

Later, World No.6 Smith calculated that it would take two cans beer to fill the trophy.

He continued, "I'll probably be having about 20 Claret Jugs."

"To be completely honest, I'm tired. It's been an exhausting week. I would be shocked if I made it to 10:00 or 11:00 tonight.

Smith said that his family has not travelled the 12,000 mile from Down Under to cheer him along.

He stated that his dad had been supposed to be there, but he pulled out last minute. It was the idea of doing all that traveling for one week.

"He is definitely getting mad at himself. It would have been great to be there with him. Even without the trip, it would have been a great week to be at the golf course. He loves golf too. It would have been amazing."

Smith made a tribute to McIlroy, who hasn't won any of the four biggest trophies in golf since 2014.

Smith stated that Smith is "one of those guys you can't stop watching when he hits balls on the range. And he just keeps knocking at doors every week. He is probably the most consistent player here.

"He will get another Major, I'm certain, very soon. He is just solid. Rory is a solid player.
