What is the difference between fourballs versus foursomes in golf? And in what order do they play at the Ryder Cup.

EUROPE hopes to keep the Ryder Cup in Wisconsin from the American team.

The action will begin on Friday, September 24th. But do you know the difference of a fourball or a foursome?

For the 42nd Ryder Cup, the American team has nine major winners

What is a Foursome?

The teams play in pairs, with each player taking alternate shots with the ball until it is gone.

It can be difficult if the ball is unfamiliar to players.

They also alternate tee shots, with one taking the odd numbers while the other taking the even ones. This means that one player could putt and then take the team's first shot on each hole.

Each captain chooses four pairs of players to play in teams Friday morning, and four more pairs on Saturday morning.

Thomas Bjorn or Jim Furyk may pick two players from the foursomes to play in different pairs, as the foursomes are split over two days.

Each team receives one point for winning their 18 hole match, and half a point for drawing.

Eight matches have been played in this format. There are eight points at stake.

What is a Fourball?

Again, teams play in pairs, but this time, foursomes are played. The difference is that there are four balls on each course, unlike foursomes.

Each player plays their own golf ball, and the team that scores the lowest on each hole wins.

There are eight matches, split over Friday and Saturday. This time it is in the afternoon. Eight more points are available.

The event is open to both Friday and Saturday players, so it's possible for someone to play 72 holes on both days.

Are the fourballs or the foursomes first played in the Ryder Cup's fourballs?

The home team captain decides the order in which fourballs or foursomes will be played.

Both Friday and Saturday are played one round each of fourballs or foursomes.

Recent years have seen American captains prefer to play foursomes and European captains fourballs.

What are singles?

Each of the 12 men selected for their teams will play one head to head contest. Each point is worth one.

The two captains announce the order of their players simultaneously, just like foursomes or fourballs. This ensures that no team is unfairly disadvantaged.

What is the scoring process?

The Ryder Cup is won by the team with the most points, which totals 28.

Europe will keep the trophy if it ends in a draw of 14-14.
