Watch the moment a seagull dives down to grab Madelene Sagstrom's ball at Women's Open.

MADELENE SAGSTROM didn't get the birdie that she wanted during the Women's Open, after a seagull took her ball off the fairway.

As she was trying to win her first major title, the Swede was playing on the first hole of her final round at Carnoustie.

After the bird had knocked it 25 yards, officials had to chase the bird away

One local was however not impressed by her drive down the middle fairway.

The shot was hit by a seagull, which swooped in close to the spot and began to eat the ball.

It was clearly a treat for the bird, as he picked it up multiple times.

According to estimates, the ball was knocked approximately 25 yards by the intruder. Unfortunately, it was in the opposite direction of the hole.

Sagstrom was allowed to retrieve her ball after her first shot and place it exactly where it had been before she made par.

After winning her first LPGA Tour title in January last year, the 28-year old had never placed higher than 11th at majors.

She was two strokes behind the lead going into the final round, but ended up with four under in the round. This round was a pairing with Louise Duncan, her home favorite amateur.

Duncan finished 10th with an even round, while Sagstrom was second at 11-under, having bogeyed her last hole. This left her one shot behind Anna Nordqvist, the winner.

Duncan, 21, was proud to be the Women's Open's leading amateur.

She stated, "I'm thrilled with the way I played and couldn't be prouder of myself."

Madelene Sagstrom was second home despite an unusual intrusion

"I was a little disappointed by the end there, but that's to be expected. 72 is still a great result on Sunday.

"I felt a little nervous, and a bit sick. But once I had rolled in the first putt, I felt great.

"Even when I came down the last, I was perfectly fine. I wasn't nervous at any point."
