GOLF fans were perplexed after an extraordinary missed putt went viral online.

Now an expert has explained the reason behind the incident that has been described as a “golfer’s worst nightmare”.

An amateur golfer went viral after his attempted putt went viral

He looked on course to sink it before an extraordinary turn of events

And it has come at just the perfect time for the competitors taking part in this weekend’s 2023 Ironman Tournament at Gilbert Plains in Canada.

Back in the 2021 edition, a clip first went viral after one of the wildest putting attempts ever.

The amateur golfer took his swing left-handed and sent the ball creeping straight towards the whole on the 16th.

A friend watching one declared “this is good, Doug” while another claimed he “liked this one” as he appeared to be on course for a 20-yard putt.

However, about an inch from dropping, the ball suddenly darted right before rolling down a slope and ending up about 20 yards away as the men in the video creamed in disbelief.

“What, what, what, what, whaaaattt, what,” screamed one as another yelped: “There’s no chance.”

Ahead of this week’s showpiece, the video has found itself doing the rounds again online.

The Iron Man Tournament at Gilbert Plains Country Club takes place each year at the end of its season.

Teams of four are charged $200 to try and take on the notoriously difficult course that has been assembled by the groundsman.

According to reports, “the track in Manitoba backs up its tees, speeds up its greens and drops its holes in near-unmakeable locations”.

Following the viral footage, people had claimed that it was an “illegal pin”, “fake” or staged” as others even suggested that the ball was “on a string”.

But the KNG Golf account on X, formerly known as Twitter, has now explained the extraordinary scenes.

They wrote: “A little secret we found out right after the putt missed…

“The greenskeeper took a tee between the cup and the grass, and lifted the front side of the lip (creating a small mound).

“It didn’t have enough speed, which is why the ball took a hard right turn at the hole.”

They then offered some sound advice to anyone taking part this weekend, adding: “So we patted it down, hit with speed, and the next putt dropped.

“SNEAKYYY MOVE. There’s a little cheat code for tomorrow for anyone who’s playing in the Ironman! You’re welcome!”
