Tiger Woods' incredible journey from redemption at The Masters to near-fatal car accident and remarkable comeback with his son

TIGERWOODS is back in the sport that made him famous.

The 45-year-old golf legend is back at the PNC Championship with his son Charlie, 12. This comes just 10 months after he was in a terrible car accident that left him with severe leg injuries. He was also wheelchair bound for three months.

It concludes a remarkable story that began in 2019, when he won the Masters against all odds and found redemption at the Masters.

He also shows that he is keen to return to the PGA Tour, if his body can withstand the rigours and demands of first-class golf.

MAGICAL YEAR

We were celebrating Tiger at majors just two years ago.

Augusta was packed with fans as he won his fifth Masters title. He also ended an 11-year wait for his 15th major.

After numerous affairs were revealed, his public image was damaged and his marriage to Elin Nordegren ended.

His reputation was further tarnished by a severe painkiller addiction due to his back problems.

He wore the green jacket to reveal why he was determined to make a remarkable turnaround in his fortunes.

He stated, "This game was taken from me for a few decades there. And I miss competing. I miss playing.

"Now, I have the opportunity to do it again and to be able share it with my children.

"They don’t remember me enjoying golf, because all they remember is Daddy in pain on the ground.

Golf brings me so much joy that they can see it. It brings a smile on their faces and it brings me a smile.

Woods' achievement was still awe inspiring me as I reminisce about it to the American newspaper USA Today a year later.

He said, "It's amazing that somehow it all fell together for one week. One magical week. To have so many things work right that week. That's what you need to do to win an event.

But to get it done there, there are so many small things that need to be right. It's something I have been able to do four times before, but this year was an incredible week."

CAR ACCIDENT

Tiger acknowledged that winning the Masters had taken a lot from him mentally, physically and emotionally.

He needed courage and strength to get through the most difficult time.

Woods was driving his 2021 Genesis GV80 SUV along a Los Angeles street in February when it collided with a tree, and then began rolling over.

The former world No1 was immediately taken to hospital where it was found that he had suffered serious injuries to his right leg.

Emergency surgery was performed to stabilize his tibia, femur and other bones.

To hold the badly broken bones of his foot, and ankle together, a "combination" of pins and screws was used.

Woods was in hospital for three months, and by the time he was no longer bed-bound, he needed a wheelchair to move around. Woods finally returned to his Jupiter Island home in Florida to recover.

'LUCKY to be alive'

Woods spoke candidly before reporters and photographers about his recovery process.

He joked, in a lighthearted mood: "I built this really nice house but I didn’t realize how big it was until I started putting crutches onto it."

"There were times when I had to stop, but I can tell you that there was a time when my triceps got very jacked. That was a lot fun."

As he described the many surgeries he had to go through, he admitted that he knew he was fortunate to be alive.

"Those operations were one, that's one level," he said.

"Add the back and that's another level. Then there was this right leg. That was... It's difficult to explain how difficult that has been to just be immobile for three months. I just laid there, and was looking forward to getting out.

Woods said, "I'm fortunate to be alive and have a leg."

Woods said that he was not able to commit to a return to Tour level but that he would like to look to the future.

Woods will be making a comeback at PNC Championship, even though he isn't sure if he will return to his Tour level best.

Woods revealed that "this year's been an awful year."

It's been filled with some difficult memories, some tough times, and also some great times. It would be nice to start over.

Tiger would be a great partner for Charlie, his prodigal son at the PNC Championship. Together, they will deliver an emphatic return and another best-seller.
