Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy announce a new stadium-style multi-million pound event. PGA Tour takes a dig at LIV Golf rivals

TIGER WOODS, Rory McIlroy will take golf to the next level after announcing a new "tech-infused" league that will be played in a STADIUM.

Yesterday, the PGA's superstars launched TGL - a virtual golf course that is a mile long in a specially-built arena - to counter the LIV series from Saudi Arabia.

The new golf format will be played in a stadium and on Mondays

To complement the PGA Tour schedule, six teams of three will compete on Monday nights in a televised event that lasts two hours.

The 15-match series will see the stars take shots into a gigantic video screen golf simulator before hitting the green at the centre of the arena.

Woods, 46 (fifteen-time major champion), said that TGL was the next evolution in professional golf and that he is committed to leading it into the future.

"We can move our sport into primetime on a regular basis by embracing technology alongside many of the biggest sports events."

We all know what it feels like to be in a stadium for basketball or football, where every play and every minute of action is right in front.

"It's something that is inherently impossible in traditional golf -- and a feature of TGL which will set it apart, and appeal to new generations of fans."

After their partnership with TMRW Sports, McIlroy and Woods were anti-LIV players, they became the first to sign up for TGL.

McIlroy, 33 added that TGL would tap into the appeal and fan-friendly atmosphere of team golf in an exciting, fan friendly environment, similar to being courtside at a NBA game.

"TGL will increase the appeal of golf for younger and more diverse players and provide another avenue for me to introduce people the game I love to them."

Jay Monahan, chief of the PGA Tour, confirmed that LIV rebels would not be allowed to join the tour. This is after top golfers committed to playing at least 20 events a season next year.

The tournaments include four major championships, The Players Championship, and 12 "elevated", tournaments per year with an average purse value of PS17 millions.

Players will then be able to decide on a minimum three additional PGA tournaments. Stars are now guaranteed a minimum PS423,000 in order to play in 15 events that rookies can participate in.

Monahan answered the question "No.

"The LIV Golf Series players have made that commitment, and many of them have made multi-year commitments.

"I have been clear all along, every player has the option and I respect that choice."

"Our top players support the Tour. This will help us deliver an unmatched product for our fans. They can expect to see the best players competing in 20 events or more during the season."

The FedExCup Playoffs, which include the Genesis Invitational and Arnold Palmer Invitational as well as the Memorial Tournament, WGC–Dell Match Play Championship, Memorial Tournament, Memorial Tournament, Sentry Tournament of Champions, have been designated as elevated events. Four more are yet to be announced.

The PGA Tour doubled the amount of their Player Impact Program, which financially rewards 20 of its biggest players to PS84.7m.
