McIlroy stated that he couldn't be happier as he chases down Morikawa in Massachusetts and Dahmen.

He stated that he could ride waves of momentum quite easily. You try to ride the wave as long as possible, but you also have to keep your eyes on the crest. I've learned to avoid riding the waves downwards, so that you don't get caught up in the next wave.

"This course is very fluid. I can go on a little run and make some birdies. If I encounter it this week, I feel like my ability to ride those waves of momentum throughout a round.

"I believe I play quite an emotive version of golf.

"I have always enjoyed being in a crowd. The interaction is what I enjoy. That is what I love. It's a pleasure to see people out there. Perhaps that's part.

"I've been here a while. They might feel that they have watched me grow up, and that they are part of the journey with me.

He said that despite his slow start, he was patient and knew that if he hit the ball as he has been, it would give him chances.

"Today was a great example of having a positive attitude. I am very happy in my current position. After a difficult start, I came back strong today and was right at the top of my game. Couldn't have been happier."
