A US Open fan falls to the floor and holds his head as he was hit with a ball by Phil Mickelson. The crowd rushes to see him.

After he shot a shot at a fan on Friday, PHIL MICKELSON'S US Open weekend turned sour.

The 52-year old American is bidding to win the major he has yet to win. He was trying to recover from Thursday's shocking opening round, which saw him finish with an 8-over 78.

This weekend, the American was not able to enjoy a successful round on the course.

His disappointing performance at The Country Club was not over. He struck a spectator with a strayball on day 2.

After being struck by the ball, the fan was seen lying on his stomach in one bunker clutching his face.

Supporters rushed to his aid and checked on his condition.

Only nine players were lower than Mickelson at the time of the incident on the 156-strong leaderboard.

His striking of the fan is a sign of what has been a terrible weekend for the six-time major winner, both on and off the fairway.

Mickelson became embroiled in controversy after he opted to play in the first Saudi-backed LIV Golf event.

Due to human rights violations in Saudi Arabia, the tournament has been heavily criticised.

Mickelson answered questions before the US Open in Brookline (Massachusetts).

And he looked embarrassed when he was asked for his reactions to the open letter from a US terrorist survivors group, 911familiesunited.org.

Terry Strada wrote a letter to her husband, who died in the attacks on September 11. She stated that "Given Saudi Arabia’s role in the deaths of our loved ones, and those injured on September 11, 2001 -- your fellow Americans," she was angry at the Saudis' willingness to cover this up in their request for respectability.

"When you partner up with the Saudis, your complicity with their whitewash is what you do. You help them gain the reputational coverage they so desperately desire -- and will pay handsomely for to manufacture.

"The Saudis don't care about deep-rooted golfmanship or its origins as a gentlemen's game based on core values of mutual respect, personal integrity, and other human rights.

They want professional golf to improve their reputation and they pay you to do so.

Saudi Arabia insists that they are not complicit in any allegations of the attacks.

Mickelson stated Monday that he would say to the Strada families, and to all those who have lost loved ones or friends on September 11, that he has deep sympathy and empathy for them.

"I cannot stress that enough and I believe I speak for all Americans in this regard."
