Rory McIlroy is devastated by the US Open loss and vows to endure '100 Sundays' like this for his fifth Major.

RORY McILROY insists he will go through “100 Sundays like this” in order to get his hands on a fifth Major championship following a devastating second-place at the US Open.

McIlroy, 34, shot a final round of 70 in Los Angeles on Sunday to finish one behind American winner Wyndham Clark, 29.

The Northern Irishman shot a final round of 70 in Los Angeles

The result meant McIlroy managed to make the top three of a Major for the third time since the start of 2022 – following his second at last year’s Masters and third at The Open.

But a first Major since his 2014 PGA Championship triumph continues to elude the Northern Irishman.

Yet despite failing to end his nine-year wait in California, McIlroy continued to take the positives from his performance.

Speaking to the media immediately after Clark’s victory, he said: “I’m getting closer. The more I keep putting myself in these positions, sooner or later it’s going to happen for me.

“I would go through 100 Sundays like this to get my hands on another major championship.

“When I do finally win this next major, it’s going to be really, really sweet.”

McIlroy also revealed he did not even watch Clark’s winning putt – which clinched the American his first Major championship.

He added: “I didn’t even need to wait for the tap-in.

“It’s just fine, fine margins at this level and at this tournament specifically, but I fought to the very end.”

McIlroy now heads to the Open Championship in four weeks time as he looks to produce a performance reminiscent of his 2014 victory.

Nine years ago, his score of 17 under saw him claim the title in Liverpool.

He then went on to clinch the PGA Championship three weeks later – his last Major triumph.
