Henrik Stenson has been removed from the Ryder Cup captaincy. Will he be playing for Europe in 2023?

OPEN Championship winner Henrik Stenson was STRIPPED from his Team Europe Ryder Cup captaincy. But that may not be all of his worries.

46-year-old Stenson has helped Europe win three of his five Ryder Cup appearances as an individual player, including the 2018 home tournament at Le Golf National.

Henrik Stenson was stripped of the Team Europe Ryder captaincy

The Swedish icon, however, has now been made captain of Team Europe after just four months.

Learn why...

Why was Henrik Stenson stripped of his Ryder Cup captaincy in the first place?

Henrik Stenson's dedication to the breakaway Golf LIV Invitational Series led to his resignation as Team Europe captain.

The controversial Saudi-backed league had frequently been linked to the Swede.

Stenson sparked speculation by telling reporters that he was still deciding on his schedule for the rest of the year after missing the cut at last Friday's Open.

Team Europe released a shocking statement that stated: "Ryder Cup Europe today confirms Henrik Stenson's tenure at the 2023 Ryder Cup at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club, Rome, Italy, from September 25th to October 1st 2023 has been ended with immediate effect.

"Henrik has made decisions in regard to his personal circumstances and it has become obvious that he is unable to fulfill certain contractual obligations to Ryder Cup Europe which he had previously committed to before his announcement as captain on Tuesday, March 15, 2022. It is therefore impossible for him to continue the captain's role.

Will Henrik Stenson be a European Ambassador in 2023?

Due to the European Tour ban on players participating in the LIV Golf tournament, Stenson will not be playing for Europe in 2023.

In June, the European Tour announced that golfers would not be allowed to play in the Scottish Open and Barbasol Championship.

The organisers will likely apply the same rules to players in 2023.

Who will be next to become the Team Europe Ryder Cup Captain?

The next Team Europe Ryder Cup captain is not yet confirmed.

Rumours suggest Luke Donald, the vice-captain for 2021, could replace Stenson.

Thomas Bjorn was the captain of Team Europe, the 2018 Ryder Cup winner

Thomas Bjorn was the leader of Europe's improvise win in 2018, which makes the Dane an attractive candidate.

Scotland's Paul Lowrie was initially under consideration at the time Henrik became captain, so that his name could be again emerged.

Robert Karlsson, who was vice captain during previous competitions, is also a contender.
