Gary Player's wife Vivienne has died
Player shared the news via social media on Wednesday night, writing: "The Unthinkable has occurred."
"Vivienne, my childhood sweetheart, my rock and my soulmate, has lost her battle against pancreatic cancer.
"I can't describe the profound sadness I feel at losing the one person who meant the most to me.
In January 1957, Bobby Verwey's sister, Vivienne Verwey, married the nine-time major champion.
They had six children and welcomed 22 grandchildren and two great grandchildren to the world.
Player said: "Vivienne is a constant in mine life since the moment that I first saw her when I was 14.
"She supported me in my career and raised our six kids almost entirely while I was traveling the world playing golf.
"She was a loving wife, a loving mom, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a remarkable human being who cared deeply about others and lived her entire life in service of others.
"Vivienne taught me love, faith, and trust. These values were passed on to our children by her, and they were fortunate to have a mother who lived them every day.
"When I first met you, I was certain it was love at first glance. It turned out to be the love story of my life. It will be the same when we get back together.
"Until then, my Viv will be missed very much."
Vivienne has been remembered by many golfers via social media. Ian Poulter tweeted: "Gary. You and your family are always in our thoughts and prayers on such a special day." RIP Vivienne."
Phil Mickelson wrote, "We all feel the loss and sadness." I am grateful to have had the opportunity to get to know her, and I know how much she loved sharing her life with me. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and all your family."
