Since 1995, Mickelson has been a frequent face at the Ryder Cup.
Six-time Major winner Phil Mickelson will not be appearing for USA.
Why isn't Phil Mickelson representing the USA at Ryder Cup?
Phil Mickelson, one of the most decorated golfers, won the PGA Championship making him the oldest Major winner.
He has participated in 12 Ryder Cup matches over the years.
He's been a majorstay in every tournament since his debut in 1995.
Mickelson won't be representing Team USA at Whistling Straits this time.
After Steve Stricker's appointment as vice-captain, Phil has decided to leave the course.
The 51-year old will still be around this week as he and Stricker attempt to win the first USA victory since 2016.
Mickelson was the oldest Major winner ever when he won the PGA Championship earlier in the year.
Mickelson said after being appointed vice-captain, "I'm humbled to be a part this year's Ryder Cup in my capacity as assistant captain."
"I want to thank Captain Steve Stricker and all the others for including me.
"You want guys to be their best.
"If they play their best golf the US team is really strong with many great young players and a lot more young talent.
"But you have to get the best out of them."
