Sergio Aguero, a former football star, is hoping Cameron Smith wins the US Open after placing a PS4,000 wager on the Australian winner of the major golf event.

Aguero, an ex-striker for Barcelona and Manchester City, believes Smith can win over Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler over the four days at Brookline.

Argentina's ace footballer, who had to quit last year due to health reasons, has been a big golf fan for the past few years.

After sharing his swing tips over video messaging, the 34-year old has formed a friendship to Smith.

This has led Aguero, who is now a staker at PS4,000 in crypto casino and sports betting website Stake.com to see his friend win the tournament to secure his first Major victory.

Aguero stated: "I support Cameron Smith for the US Open On Stake."

Smith is one of the most anticipated stars this week, as the best golfers in the world battle it out to win the US Open - even the rebel players who participated in the LIV Invitational last weekend.

Aguero will also be able to collect an incredible PS86,000 if the Brisbane-based 28-year old wins Sunday's match.

Aguero is a regular player on the course and often teams up with Carlos Tevez, a former City and Manchester United star.

Smith isn't off to the best start.

The Aussie is in T57 with Jordan Spieth and Patrick Cantlay as well as Cameron Young, Cameron Young, and 18 other people.

Adam Hadwin leads, followed by Rory McIlroy and Joel Dahmen. Callum Tarren is next, M.J. Daffue, Callum Tarren and David Lingmerth in the T2.
