PADRAIG HARRINGTON gave wild cards to Sergio Garcia and Ian Poulter - which broke Justin Rose's heart.
Rose looked convinced that he had done enough for the European captain to choose him after a stunning final round 65 in BMW PGA Championship saw him move up to sixth at Wentworth.
Padraig Harrington confirmed his team for Team Europe's Ryder Cup quest
Justin Rose is devastated after he was denied a chanceHarrington chose to go for Garcia and Poulter, two men who have been Ryder Cup heroes.
Lowry was the next to qualify, having been knocked out yesterday of the last nine automatic spots by Bernd Wiesberger.
Garcia, the Ryder Cup's record points scorer, was certain to receive a wildcard, especially after Garcia, the 2017 Masters champion, played well enough on PGA Tour to qualify to the 30-man Tour Championship, for the first time since 2004.
It is not common for the man finishing closest to the qualifying places to be able to miss out. Lowry was therefore another stick-on.
Harington is also close friends with the ex-Open champion and is often his partner in practice.
Poulter and Rose were two men who shared a room twenty years ago when they began their second-tier Challenge Tour.
Poulter was voted the Postman, the man who delivers the goods at the Ryder Cup.
Harrington said, "Poults brings so much passion to the team. He is undefeated at singles at six Ryder Cups. We have also seen him lift his teammates and the whole team in fourballs or foursomes.
"Sergio shares the same passion for Ryder cup and is an amazing presence in the team room. He holds the Ryder Cup record for points, and I expect him to score a few more at Whistling Straits.
"Shane Lowry may be a rookie, but he has won the Major and won the World Golf Championship so no one thinks of him as a rookie.
"He has been subject to tremendous pressure all year as a man on the bubble and has proven he is ready for the big occasion."
Garcia stated, "It's amazing to be selected for the eleventh Ryder Cup. I am so proud of the faith shown in me by the captain and vice-captains. I cannot wait to help the team.
"My 25-and-a-half points are less than the six wins they have helped Europe achieve. I hope I can provide more points for another win."
Lowry said: "It has been an amazing week - I just became a father for a second time, and now I look forward to my first Record Cup. Fantastic."
Shane Lowry was among three captain's picks
After his Ryder Cup antics, Sergio Garcia was a natural wildcard.Poulter stated: "It's surreal being standing next to the trophy, and to think that I'll soon try to win it back in Europe. I love team sport, team spirit, and team atmosphere. I am proud and excited. I will be puffed up at Whistling Straits as always."
Rose was quick to argue his case after Wentworth's brilliant effort. He said: "My record in the Ryder Cup is as good or better than anyone's - and my record away is from the Ryder Cup as a Major champion, world No 1, is also as great as anyone's."
The scramble to find automatic places was not easy. Wiesberger replaced Lowry in the top 9, although Lee Westwood and the Austrian had moments when it seemed like they might be left out.
Wiesberger, 35 years old, has won eight times on European Tour. He said that he has never felt the pressure that he felt when he was working out the level par 72 which kept him in the top twenty.
He said, "Fortunately, I laid the foundation in the first three day because today was different."
"It was the most amazing feeling I have ever felt on a golf course. It was very stressful. You are usually excited when you win tournaments. As the round progresses, you get more comfortable with it.
"Today, it never let off and I had to take deep breathes for each shot. That's what it means for me to be able play on a Ryder Cup Team.
After a terrible collapse, Westwood began the final round acting as if it was his last chance to prove that he still had a lot to offer at 48.

Team Europe's third wild card was Ian PoulterHe lost his birdie-birdie beginning as he had two double bogeys, a triple around turn and crashed to a five-over par 77 and a share at level par of 71st.
Westwood groaned, "I got unlucky with seven and eight. I was six feet from the hole and pitched it six foot past the hole. It screwed back in to the water."
"I made twice as much, and then I lost it mentally. The toys probably escaped from their cot. This game is a great way to beat you up. If there was a buggy on the ninth tee I would have taken it in."
