THE RYDER CUP descended into jubilant chaos as dozens of European fans celebrated by diving into the lake.
Tommy Fleetwood wrapped up the historic victory at Marco Simone thanks to his glorious tee shot on the 16th hole.
One fan launched himself into the water beside the 16th green
European fans followed suit by diving in after him
After going two up with two to play, it unofficially ensured he added an extra half to take Europe to the magic 14½ points needed to wrestle back the iconic trophy from the United States.
And one grey-haired supporter sprinted out from the crowds, evaded security and darted across the 16th green.
Then the bloke, with white hair and a white beard just like Santa or KFC’s Colonel Sanders, ditched his hat and bombed into the water in sensational scenes.
And plenty of other supporters followed suit by replicating the phenomenal celebration amid incredible scenes in Rome.
Europe’s Ryder Cup Twitter account shared an aerial shot of the supporters swimming and wrote: “We have fans in the water, repeat, fans in the water.”
And one golf fan was desperate to see the 12 heroes join in too, adding: “We want players in the water.”
Jon Rahm was in the water earlier on during a memorable Sunday, as he somehow found the green despite standing in a stream behind a bridge.
The Spaniard delivered the goods to rescue a half-point against world No1 Scottie Scheffler.
Rory McIlroy broke down in tears as he secured his singles victory over Sam Burns and Tyrrell Hatton put Europe on 14 points and needing just one extra half to seal victory.
And that came when Fleetwood moved two up with two to play against Rickie Fowler and therefore guaranteed at least a half.
Shane Lowry secured his half seconds later in similar fashion – moving one up after the 17th against Jordan Spieth – but it was Fleetwood who got his point officially on the board first.
And that ensured Luke Donald’s men would get their hands on the trophy after the nightmare at Whistling Straits two years ago.
