RORY MCILROY has accused the LIV tour of “making up their own rules”.

The British star is an outspoken critic of the Saudi-backed project and has taken his latest dig while speaking at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

Last week, LIV penned a letter to golf chiefs asking for Official World Golf Ranking status.

This is despite the hated series still falling short in a number of categories.

Asked about the rankings, McIlroy said: “I certainly would want the best players in the world ranked accordingly.

“If Dustin Johnson is somehow 100th in the world, it’s not an accurate reflection of where he is in the game.

“But at the same time, you can’t make up your own rules. There’s criteria there, everyone knows what they are.

“If they want to pivot to meet the criteria they can.

“I’ve no problem with them getting ranking points at all, but you have to meet the criteria.

“If you don’t it’s harder to justify why you should have them.”

In what has been a divisive year for the sport, McIlroy has sought to row back a little from some of his previous comments.

Speaking to the BB, the 33-year-old admitted: “I’ve probably said a few things that are maybe too inflammatory at times.

“But it just comes from the heart and how much I hate what this is doing to the game.

“It has been an ugly year (but) there’s a solution to everything.

“If we can send rockets to the moon and bring them back again and have them land on their own I’m sure we can figure out how to make professional golf cohesive again.”

Speaking to Piers Morgan, LIV CEO Greg Normal launched a passionate defence of his series.

Criticising McIlroy and Co, the 67-year-old said: “The hypocrisy coming out of this is so deafening it’s ridiculous.

“The PGA Tour has title sponsors that have a great relationship, a working relationship, for a commercial opportunity with the Saudi Government, and with PIF.

“Rory, happy days, he can do what he wants to do. If he’s comfortable over there doing that, he’s an independent contractor, he can.

“If Rory wants to go to the Middle East and get appearance money to play in tournaments, go play in those Rory, that’s your choice.

“(But) don’t begrudge the other players for making a decision, that is a rightful decision under their independent contractual rights, to go and do it.”
