Rory McIlroy's home hero is in open heartbreak following Cameron Smith's heroics. Erica Stoll, Erica Stoll's wife, watches nervously

RORY MILROY's wife Erica Stoll watched nervously as her husband lost the 150th Open Championship.

The Northern Irishman was defeated by Cameron Smith, despite a round that saw him score 18 under par and a round without bogey.

After losing to Cameron Smith, Rory McIlroy continues to wait for a major.

Smith set the record score at the old course, after an incredible Sunday 64 that saw him come from behind to finish 20-under par and win the title by one shot over American Cameron Young.

Although he was highly tipped for success at the Masters, the victory gives him significant glory.

It means McIlroy's majorless streak will continue for a ninth season, despite McIlroy's remarkable improvement in consistency, with top ten finishes at all four showpiece events.

Viktor Hovland was the overnight leader, with five-time major champion. He played a steady round until he started to lose his playing partner.

Smith was however the only one in front and he made a spectacular run of five birdies consecutively to start the back nine. He ended the round with a score 64.

McIlroy fans were nervous about the emphatic win, and Erica was no exception.

They have been married for over a year, and tied the knot in an Irish wedding.

As he seeks his first major since 2014, his time as his supporter has not been the most successful.

They met while playing on the PGA Tour. McIlroy split from Caroline Wozniacki, his tennis girlfriend, just before McIlroy was due to get married.

McIlroy will now be preparing for the new season, and McIlroy is still looking to win the highly-coveted grand slam.

This will be secured by Victory at Augusta, as he has the Masters left from his career honors.
