RORY MCILROY has been slammed by fans due to his decision to skip a prestigious event.

The Northern Irishman completed golf’s Grand Slam as he finally got his hands on the Green Jacket at the Masters in April.

Since victory at Augusta, McIlroy’s form has dipped with him coming seventh at the Truist Championship and 47th at the PGA Championship.

And he will not take to the course this weekend as he has chosen not to play in the Memorial Tournament.

The event was founded by icon Jack Nicklaus in 1976 and it is still hosted by him today.

McIlroy has played at the tournament in Dublin, Ohio every year since 2017.

But he has made the decision to not feature this time around to the anger of fans and disappointment of Nicklaus.

The 18-time major winner even admitted to being “surprised” at the McIlroy’s move before confirming he has not spoken to him about it.

Though Nicklaus said “it is his call” and he “would not hold anything against Rory”.

The pair have a strong relationship after McIlroy turned to him for advice before his Masters success this year.

McIlroy has already skipped the RBC Heritage and Corales Puntacana Championship since his thrilling play-off win at Augusta.

One supporter raged: “So he’s going to miss three signature events? Wasn’t there supposed to be a punishment for this?”

Another added: “Disgusting. Jack’s tournament is a prestigious tournament.”

A third wrote: “This is a really bad look.”
