That is after sacking off an appearance at the RBC Heritage — and giving up $3million of his Player Impact Program winnings by missing a second designated event.

McIlroy says it was down to his heartache after failing once more to grab the Green Jacket and complete the career Grand Slam.

He said: “I needed a break for me.

“After the disappointment of Augusta and a taxing 12 months mentally it was nice to just try to disconnect a little bit.

“But it’s nice to come back and feel refreshed. I think we’re on a busy run here from now until the play-offs — I’m excited to get going again.”

And McIlroy knows it is important to shine at Quail Hollow this week.

He added: “After the disappointment of Augusta and how I played there it was for my emotional and mental well-being that I needed to be at home.

“But I am looking forward to getting back at it this week.”
