McIlroy finished 21 under par at East Lake with a closing 66, one shot ahead of Scottie Scheffler and Sungjae Im, who were odds-on favorites to win his fifth win of this season and the PS15.3million prize.

Scheffler was unable to score a 73, and McIlroy took full advantage of this to win an exceptional victory.

He began the week six shots behind world No1 according to the handicap scoring system, making a triple-bogey on the first hole.

McIlroy now has PS36.6million to show for his three FedEx Cup wins. Tiger Woods (2007 and 2009) is the other player who has won it more than once.

McIlroy won in a playoff the FedEx Cup 2016

In 2019, he won the FedEx Cup for the second year in a staggered beginning.

This was the best fall yet, as it came after a year when the PGA Tour was in a bitter battle with Saudi-funded LIV Golf. LIV Golf already attracted more than two dozen players, and is now part of an antitrust suit against the PGA Tour.

McIlroy stated, "What a week. What a day," at the award presentation.

"First, I want to say that I believe Scottie should at least half this (trophy).

He has had an amazing season. It's kind of sad that I lost to him.

"He's a great competitor, he is an even better man, it was an honor and a privilege today to fight with him and I'm sure there will be many more.

"I told him that we are one-all in Georgia this season; he got the Masters and I got this.

"I didn’t give myself much chance to tee off today. I thought six behind would be hard to overcome, but my good play combined with Scottie’s not-so great play made it a fun game going into the back nine."

McIlroy was asked what it meant to win in a season where he has been a major advocate for the PGA Tour in its fight with LIV Golf. He replied: "It means an awful LOT.

Rory McIlroy plays the 13th hole in the final round at the Tour Championship

"I believe the game of golf, and I believe in this Tour, in particular, I believe that the players on this Tour are good.

"It's the best place to play golf in the world, bar none. I've played all around the world.

"This is a very proud moment for me, but it should also be an incredibly proud time for the PGA Tour.

"They've had some tough times this year, but we are getting through them and that was quite a spectacle today.

"Two of best players in the world went head to head for the largest prize on the PGA Tour, and I hope everyone at the home enjoyed it."

McIlroy acknowledged that his win would "soften" the disappointment of not winning the 150th Open Championship at St Andrews. McIlroy was in the lead after 54 holes, but finished third behind Cameron Smith. He is expected to join LIV Golf shortly.

McIlroy stated that "St Andrews was really difficult for me."

It was hard to overcome. This helps to soften the blow.

It doesn't make the season any easier, but it's nice to finish it on a high note.

"Everyone on Tour has had a lot to deal with. Even LIV's guys had to deal with it all.

"It's been a very turbulent era in our game."
