Charlie Kane, who manages social media for PGA Tour was there as a supporter.

After McIlroy's errant tee shots, McIlroy's left hand was a big mistake.

Kane was admitted to St. Andrew's Community Hospital with a fractured hand.

In a series photos, he posted the receipts to Twitter. His hand was visible discoloured and his fingers were swelling.

The tweet was captioned by him saying "Fractured Hand after Rory McIlroy’s drive landed onto my knuckle."

"He shouted fore. I ignored the warning. #TheOpen"

Rory McIlroy had a great day, despite the errant drive.

Cameron Young is currently in second place with -6, his opening round score of 64.

This was his lowest opening score at The Open in four years. He also started with 66, and won the tournament.

He told Sky Sports that he had played well. Excellent. Everyone knows that on the golf course you must make your score going out. I did this.

"I started out tremendously with a bonus at my first shot; little adrenaline with the second shot and hit it quite far.

"Birdied par five, birdied par fours with a wedge, and then on the back nine it got so tricky, even though it's downwind.

"I birdied all the holes I should have today, and made only one mistake."

"The way this course plays, how firm, bouncy, and tricky it can be, it's all about limiting your errors, and one bogey today was good."
