Patrick Reed, GOLF's star player, was taken to the hospital with pneumonia. He will not be able to attend this weekend’s BMW Championship.
After his Texas hospital admission, the former Masters champion assured fans that he is 'on track to recovery'.
Patrick Reed, a former Masters champion, has been diagnosed as having pneumoniaReed hasn't played competitive golf since he was injured in his ankle and withdrew from the St Jude Invitational earlier in the month.
Although the ankle problem is not serious, the 31-year old now has to deal with pneumonia.
Sky Sports reported Reed's statement that Reed stated: "The good thing is, my ankle works fine. Unfortunately, I was admitted to the hospital for bilateral pneumonia.
"I am on the road to recovery. After I am cleared by the doctors, I look forward to my return. I wish you all of the best, and I cannot wait to be back on the field!
"I am grateful for your support. It means a lot to my family. A special thank-you to all the staff and doctors at The Methodist Hospital, Texas Medical Center.
Justine Reed, Reed's wife, has confirmed that he will miss the BMW Championship, but will return to action as soon as his doctors allow him to.
The Texan is one the most well-known golfers on the planet. He beat Rickie Folwer to win 2018 Masters - his first major title.
Reed continues to win trophies. In January, he won the Farmers Insurance Open - his latest PGA Tour title – and a trophy.
It is not clear if Reed's diagnosis is due to Covid. Many positive cases develop pneumonia.
Since the pandemic started, several golfers tested positive for Covid. Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau were both absent from the Olympics.
Reed currently ranks 18th in the world, but he is at risk of missing out on the prestigious end–of-season Tour Championship because he is absent.
