Fans have joked about Cantlay not wearing a hat after his controversy during the competition in Italy

Cantlay married his partner Nikki Guidish in Rome just one day after Team Europe reclaimed the Ryder Cup from the States.

And fans have been quick to joke about his attire following his back and forth with golf fans on the course at Marco Simone.

Cantlay inspired a late fightback from Team USA after an abysmal first day which saw them trailing by five points and without a single win.

It was the unlikely controversy surrounding the 31-year-old’s decision not to wear a hat out on the course that ignited the fire in the USA’s attempt to claw things back.

Reports had suggested that Cantlay was refusing to wear a hat like the rest of his team in protest to Ryder Cup players not being paid to take part in the historic event.

However the world number five disputed the claims and said it was simply because the caps provided didn’t fit his head.

Despite his rebuttal, European fans began to wave their hats at Cantlay on the course in an attempt to joke with the PGA Tour star.

Cantlay continued to go hat-less for the remainder of the tournament, but fans have joked online that he should have worn one at his wedding to in an attempt to keep the hilarious drama going.

One fan wrote: “He should have worn a hat. Round the bit out.”

While another added: “No hat for the wedding? Bold move.”

A third commented: “Still not wearing a hat.”

A fourth fan even joked about getting paid, writing: “Wonder if he asked to be paid to attend the wedding? Asking for a friend.”

Cantlay will at least have one happy memory in Italy now after Europe’s 16.5 to 11.5 victory means Team USA are still without a Ryder Cup win on foreign soil 1993.
