Matt Fitzpatrick wins the US Open over Zalatoris & Scheffler, to complete a dream double at Brookline

MATT FITZPATRICK won the US Open in thrilling fashion to become the third English golfer after a different Battle of Brookline.

Fitzpatrick, 27, out-duelled the world No 1 Scottie Schffler and three-time Major runner up Will Zalatoris on the scene of 1999 Ryder Cup. A final round 68 earned Fitzpatrick a one-shot win.

Two families joined the Sheffield star in celebrating his win at the US Amateur title in 2013.

Brookline's victory over Sheffield star Fitzy nine years ago is a happier memory than many Europeans.

Jack Nicklaus is now his only competitor to win both the prestigious amateur title and the US Open at the same golf course. Nicklaus did the double at Pebble Beach exactly fifty-years ago.

Fitzpatrick was able to control his emotions after his first Major win - his first victory in America after seven wins on the other side.

Alex, his younger brother, and Billy Foster, his caddie, were both unable to hold back their tears. Susan, however, hugged Fitzpatrick, and said, "Oh God, I am so proud of you."

Fitpatrick exclaimed, "It's amazing. It's exactly what you dreamed of as a child, and it's now real.

"It just felt right for it to happen here."

Rory McIlroy, a four-time Major champion, waited for the climax after finishing fifth. He was clearly happy for his Ryder Cup teammate.

McIlroy shouted "Get in there!" as Fitzpatrick made a remarkable par save from the fairway bunker to win his victory.

Foster was close to winning Majors along with Lee Westwood, Darren Clarke and Thomas Bjorn. He also admitted that breaking his duck after so many years made this win more special.

Foster stated, "Unbelievably emotion. It's been 40 years of caddying, and I've even had a gorilla on me.

"He was absolutely brilliant. It's put a lot bad memories to rest.

"Happy Father's Day, my children!" When we get back, we're going to throw a great party."

Scheffler and Major Championship specialist Zalatoris couldn't agree on a solution as Scheffler, who was regarded as Europe's best putter, simply continued to find the hole at crucial times to win at six under par.

After his 2013 victory at the US Amateur, the Englishman achieved a dream double

The key moments were his fifty-footer at the 13th for birdie, followed by a 20 footer at 527 yards at the 15th. Alon g with an excellent par save for a fairway bunker at last.

Fitzpatrick won in front of his Boston family in 2013 and his own family including Alex, his younger brother who caddied for Fitzpatrick nine years ago.

Alex was the one leading the celebrations of his big brother's first professional win on US soil. He had previously won seven times in Europe. It also marked the 27-year-old Sheffield golfer's first Major victory.

Both Nicklaus and Fitzpatrick won at Pebble Beach.

The Battle of Brookline at 1999 Ryder Cup was a course that is renowned for being the backdrop for the Bottle of Brookline. Fitzpatrick took every Zalatoris and Scheffler could throw at him.

The final round was worthy of a championship with the lead changing constantly. Fitzpatrick seemed more composed and confident than his American counterparts.

Scheffler was famously asked whether he could win The Masters in a breakfast heart to heart with his wife before he donned the green jacket a few months back.

The world number one seemed to have a lot of self-doubt. He seemed to be anxious when he reached the front, rather than trying to pull away.

Scheffler at Brookline was clearly in the no-slip zone with six under par

He holled a 106 yard wedge shot at the eighth hole for an eagle, and then dropped five shots in a four-hole horror run starting at the eleventh.

Fitzpatrick, Zalatoris have a conversation at the end

He showed all the class that you would expect from a world No1 by making birdies on four of the six first holes.

Zalatoris had bogeyed two of the three leaders, and suddenly the pack was four ahead. It looked like this might turn into a two-man race.

It did until Scheffler got back-to-back birdies at ten, eleven and fourteen, before missing a quick birdie putt at 14th.

Zalatoris, and Hideki Matsuyama (the man who denied him last year's Masters title), had other ideas. They wanted Fitzpatrick or Scheffler to play it out.

Zalatoris made a comeback with four bogeys on six holes starting at the sixth.

This was enough to propel him into a lead of two shots on the ever-changing leaderboard. His English partner, however, hit the skids with three-putt Bogeys.

Matsuyama, who shot the five-under par 65 round that was the best of the week, set the clubhouse target for three under par. It always seemed like this was the best round of week.

Jon Rahm was eliminated before he had even reached the front nine, and his chances of winning the US Open title were over.

The world No. 2 began just one shot behind the lead, at three under par.

He bogeyed the par four fifth hole (301 yards) and the eighth hole (par five eighth), and never saw the chance to make the birdies that would ignite his challenge.

The Spaniard would have been horrified to hear him shout "Not today Jon" when he dropped another one at the tenth. He merely nodded in agreement.

Rory McIlroy's front 9 was much more exciting. You can talk about the eight-year drought in the Majors but there's never a dull moment when Rory McIlroy is hunting.

CHILL OUT

What is the cost of running a hot tub?

He was three shots behind and needed to make up the deficit. He made three birdies in the first six holes.

He followed every birdie up with a bogey. He was also unable to hit a good tee shot at 108 yards 11th, which resulted in him losing one for the round.

McIlroy was able to relieve the pressure by making birdies at 14- and 15-holes, climbing to a fifth share.
