Golf legend John Daly withdraws from PGA Championship day after ‘going through two packs of cigarettes & four Snickers’

GOLFING cult hero John Daly has withdrawn from the PGA Championship.

The 58-year-old has pulled out of the second major of the year after shooting 11 over yesterday.

John Daly has withdrawn from the PGA Championship

Daly, who won the PGA Championship in 1991, has been forced to withdraw from the tournament after picking up an injury to his thumb.

It would have taken a miracle for the icon to make it to the weekend anyway with his +11 start to life at Valhalla way below the projected cut.

As things stand the projected cut for the tournament is Even, with Xander Schauffele heading into today’s round as the solo lead after a stunning -9 showing yesterday – some 20 shots better off than Daly.

Despite Daly calling it a day on the PGA Championship early this year, he still managed to enjoy himself during the first round.

Gabby Herzig of The Athletic reported that she overheard a member of Daly’s group yesterday explaining that the two-time major winner was enjoying kicking back during the 18.

She claimed Daly went through two packs of cigarettes, four Snickers bars and two cans of Coke during his round.

It’s nothing new for Daly who is known for his laid back approach to the fairways and his unusual diet.

With his reputation in mind, fans took to social media to joke that a thumb injury may not be the real reason behind his withdrawal from the competition.

Daly is known for his smoking habit

One wrote: “Injured his thumb opening a beer.”

While another added: “Must’ve been cart path only.”

A third joked: “They ran out of Coke and Snickers.”

And a fourth commented: “Paper cut from the Marlboro box?”.

Daly’s early exit isn’t the only major story out of Valhalla today with the news that world number one Scottie Scheffler was detained by police when arriving at the course this morning.

The Masters champ, 27, was arrested by Louisville Metro Police while trying to drive into the entrance of this week’s PGA Championship.

Scheffler now faces charges of second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic.

Video emerged showing the star hand cuffed as he was led by cops to a police car parked outside Valhalla Golf Club.

Miraculously Scheffler still made his tee time and was given a hero’s welcome to the course before carding a BIRDIE on the first hole.
