McIlroy won the Masters in the most dramatic fashion on Sunday, needing a play-off against Ryder Cup team-mate Justin Rose.

After draining the four-foot putt for victory, the Northern Irishman sunk to his knees and broke down in tears.

And he was still overcome with emotion as he embraced his wife Erica and daughter Poppy then headed to the clubhouse.

McIlroy wiped the tears away and acknowledged the congratulations with a polite “thank you”.

He waved his arms in appreciation then took several deep breaths before running both hands over his face and through his hair, seemingly unsure quite how to react.

At the 11th attempt, McIlroy had completed the Grand Slam – only the sixth man in history to do so – and secured the green jacket he so desperately wanted.

And it was clear the magnitude of his achievement would take a while to sink in fully.

But plenty of golf fans flooded social media with hilarious captions for the video of McIlroy.

SunSport has picked out ten of the very best…

@GuyCharnock started it off with a very relatable post for any amateur golfer.

He wrote: “Me when I play 9 holes without losing a ball.”

@CFCsportsfan added: “Me when I hit a drive on the right fairway.”

@pukelidt then joked: “Me after hitting one straight ball the entire day.”

Popular cricket account @crickshouts also got involved.

They quipped: “Walking back into the pavilion after making 16* against bottom of the league…”

@buckfastbadlad mixed things up by switching it to his darts exploits.

He said: “Going to the bar for another pint after pinning D1 for a 46-dart leg.”

And sticking with alcohol-related antics, @TheRyanCarrick tweeted: “Leaving the pub after drinking 9 pints of Guinness and getting sick all over yourself.”

Another replied: “Leaving the bar after you get the ‘come over’ text.”

@TodayInSportsCo went for a riskier strategy and typed: “When my wife says… ‘You were right.'”

@GregNosar went down a similar theme and teased: “Me doing the dishes after my wife told me to.”

Arguably the best of the lot, though, came from @jmwass.

His belter read: “Me after bedtime every night for two boys under five.”

McIlroy’s heroics were watched by a record-breaking audience on Sky Sports.

A staggering 1.85million people – 37 per cent of the toal TV viewership – tuned in to see him break his Augusta hoodoo.
