Eduardo Romero, 67, has died. Tributes are paid to El Gato - the Cat - golf legend after brave battle with cancer

Eduardo Romero, a GOLF legend, died on Sunday at the age of 67 after a courageous battle with cancer.

The Argentine, also known as El Gato - The Cat' is widely considered to be one of South America’s best players.

Argentine Eduardo Romero was the 2002 Scottish Open winner. He died at the age of 67.

He was ranked 19th, his highest career ranking, in July 1991. His best result at majors was at The Open in 1997.

Romero finished seventh at Royal Troon with Fred Couples, Peter O'Malley and Peter O'Malley. Justin Leonard won his only major.

He won eight times on European Tour. The last was in 2002 at the Scottish Open. Six years later, he secured two senior majors, including the US Senior Open.

Romero also won more than 80 South American victories and represented Argentina at 14 World Cup of Golf events. He was second in 2000.

Apart from golf, El Gato was mayor of Villa Allende, his hometown.

He took a leave from work at the beginning of January because his health was deteriorating.

Popular Argentine was the subject of many tributes.

Ken Brown tweeted: “Eduardo Romero "El Gato" the beautiful golfer. Wow! He is such a warm person! You have a kind heart!

"Inspirational! Generous and always smiling! Legend - We'll all miss "The Cat" RIP.

Thomas Bjorn, a former European Ryder Cup captain wrote that it hurt. Eduardo was the most kind man.

"A great friend who was always a pleasure to have around. He was a great player, but he had an even bigger heart.

"RIP dear El Gato. "A true ambassador for Argentina and our game."

Keith Waters, European Tour COO, was a Romero player in the late 80s/early 90s. He said that "all of us at European Tour are sad to learn of Eduardo Romero's passing."

"Eduardo had a prestigious CV with two senior majors, national open of France, Scotland, and Spain.

He was an integral part of a unique group of Argentinian golfers who played on the European Tour in 1980s and 1990s, then the Seniors Tour 2000s. He was a great guy to be around and always had a smile on his faces.

"He will be greatly missed."
