Steve Stricker, Team USA captain, has been criticized for leaving out Reed, the 2018 Masters champion.
Reed has a record of 7-2-3 from his three Ryder Cup appearances. Captain America won three singles matches.
Fans were vocal in their disapproval of Reed's decision to be removed from the US team. Stricker claimed it was difficult to pick Reed.
Stricker (54), claimed that Reed's struggle with pneumonia last month was a factor in his selection. He said: "That wasn't an easy call. I lost my sleep over that one.
He's a formidable competitor. Match-play golf is his forte. His record at the Ryder Cup has been quite impressive. It was a difficult call. It was not an easy decision.
"It was only the uncertainty in his health and the lack of play that made us make our decision."
"I apologized many times to him, and just wanted to make it clear that he understood that it was a difficult decision."
